Hurricane Harvey Relief

Dear Students,

Tropical Storm Harvey has caused massive damage to the Texas Gulf Coast, and will be continuing on through the week. UT Southwestern Medical Center is looking to provide disaster relief aid through local support in Dallas for evacuees and regional resources for our fellow Texans in the storm area. Want to be involved? Here are a few of ways…

Hurricane Harvey Relief Drive– we have organized a drive to collect new underwear, new socks, new warmups for men, women, children and infants, toiletries/hygiene products, baby formula and baby wipes, bottles, non-perishable food items, diapers and Graco Pac n’ Plays for babies according to need of Dallas County VOAD member Trusted World. You can deposit your donations to the boxes designed “Hurricane Harvey Relief” on every student carrel in L building, Bryan Williams, MD student center, School of Health Professions Dean’s Office on the 9th floor, and Graduate School main office. We are hoping to collect through the next weeks and drop off items every week at 15660 N. Dallas Parkway.

Convention Center Clinic Volunteering – (Medical Student Volunteers only for now.. may extend request to HP and Grad students as things evolve and we have a better understanding of the need.)  We are working with the Dallas County Health Department and the UTSW Emergency Medicine Department to provide volunteering opportunities for students interested in helping out at the “mega shelter” in the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center.  Student responsibilities would be to help provide on-site support by doing patient check-ins, entering patient info, and other tasks as needed. We have set up a sign-up sheet to coordinate efforts at the Googledoc below. The main point of contact at the Health Department will be Connie Webster from Dallas County Medical Society.  She will take our sign up list, check DL/IDs and issue the Volunteer badge. Volunteers who sign up should go to the Dallas County Health Department 5th floor Room 520 (2377 North Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, Texas 75207-2710) in advance of their assigned shift to get an ID such that they can go directly to the Convention Center when they volunteer. Connie will contact each of you on the volunteer sign up list and send you a detailed email with instructions on where to go, park, what your assignment will be, etc.

School and clinical duties takes precedence, but please sign up when you can.  You will be serving in a non-professional role only- not delivering care, only in a support/clerical role.  We may ask for additional volunteers based on the evolving need, and if it turns out that volunteers are no longer needed, she will notify scheduled volunteers that their help is no longer required.

Blood Donations Carter BloodCare will send blood donations to its partners affected by Hurricane Harvey. The center will also deal with an increase in demand for blood and platelets as intensive care patients arrive in North Texas. Donations of all blood types are needed, especially O types.

This is a wonderful opportunity to unite to support our fellow Texans during these tragic events.

Thank you in advance for your efforts.

Warmly,

apm

Angela Peterman Mihalic, MD

What is Myenteric Plexus?

Greetings fellow classmates,

Welcome Back! We hope you’ve had a wonderful summer. Today we embark on the second year of our journey to become physicians. We as a class have accomplished much in terms of academics, community service, and personal growth. Clementine and I could not be prouder to call you our classmates and to serve as your class co-presidents. Moving forward with our last pre-clerkship semester, we hope you do take time to reflect on your progress!

As we take on Gastrointestinal System and Nutrition, please brace yourself for this week’s news.

By the Numbers

  • MS1s – Let us all please welcome the MS1 class to our UT Southwestern family. As you all know, this week is PRE+OP week and one of the biggest weeks for incoming MS1s. Please do help your fellow students get around and greet them when you do see them. A “hello” goes a long way =]! Here is the Pre+OP Schedule in case you want to meet the incoming students or want to help out. Please clink this clink: MS1 Orientation Week Schedule 2017
  • Student Organization registration – Please register your organization by Wednesday, August 9, 2017. Please see Suzette Smith (Suzette.smith@utsouthwestern.edu)s email on July 29, 2017 for more information. There will be a student organization meeting on Thursday at noon in Sanders Lounge at Student Center.
  • Email and Listserv Policy – Please be prudent when it comes to the mass blast class emails. Please try to utilize the bi-weekly email as a main source of distributing information. Please see the last weekly updates blog post “Class Email Policy” for more information on what to do and how you can help.
  • Parking Registration – The deadline to have a decal on vehicle is September 1st, 2017 and the last day to register a vehicle via web is on August 26, 2017. Please see Dr. Angela Mihalic (Angela.Mihalic@UTSouthwestern.edu)’s email on August 1, 2017 for more information.
  • UWorld – After negotiations with UWorld, our IT Gurus have finally decided not to go through with the order. Please see Kevin Nguyen (Kevin3.Nguyen@UTSouthwestern.edu)’s email on July 25, 2017 for more information.
  • Bike Rules – Some of you might have noticed the new sign on the connector bridge. Due to safety reasons, riding the bicycle on the connector bridge is prohibited between shuttle operation hours (7am – 7pm). Cyclists are welcome to walk their bikes across the bridge any time and the bike club is happy to provide information about alternative routes to commute between buildings. If you want more information on this, please contact Theresa Pohlkamp (Theresa.Pohlkamp@UTSouthwestern.edu), VP of the Bike Club at UTSW.

Class Email Policy

Greetings fellow Student Organization Representatives,

Do you remember that first week of med school? The excitement of being in a new place, meeting new people, and the absolute cats-and-dogs hurricane-level deluge of random emails?

Mass emails and the abuse of the listserv have been consistent themes during our time at UTSW. The now third year class came up the the best solution they could at the time, which was to have the class secretary, Hannah Justice, put together a bi-weekly email of all of the events and pertinent information. This was not a perfect system, but it was a great start to reduce the email traffic and create a more organized calendar of events. As your current MS2 class secretary, I have attempted to keep up with the bi-weekly email, and we have high hopes that the new MS1 class will follow suit. What that means is that 3 classes — three-quarters of the med students — will be somewhat indoctrinated into the bi-weekly emails as their main source for learning about class events and information. This could have a huge impact on reducing email traffic now and in the future.

When the new class of MS1s starts their orientation on Monday, we would love for them to be greeted by wonderful people at this new place, and not the same flood of emails that we had to swim through. While we have no power over the Spams or untagged emails that find their way through our filters, we know that we can do a better job with the number of Student Organization emails, the free lunch emails, the ‘come to my exercise/dance/underwaterbasketweaving’ class emails. We are not targeting any particular person or group, because most of us have used the open listserv at some point. We simply want to make everyone aware that it is within our reach to make a real impact on the email traffic at this school, and it starts with our class setting that example.

With all this being said, please be prudent when it comes to the mass blast class emails. Please try to utilize the bi-weekly email as a main source of distributing information. We know that this is not a perfect solution, but it can be a source of vast improvement for now. What other organizations have also done is create their own listservs and added interested members to their list. Please see the document links below for step by step instructions on how to create those listservs, and how individuals can themselves join the listservs. Suzi will also go into details about the listserv system at the student organization meeting on Thursday. If this system is not ideal for you for any reason, please voice your concerns and help us make it better for the upcoming years.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
Class of 2020 Student Government
